PLC Platforms

Allen-Bradley vs Siemens: A Practical Comparison

Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation) and Siemens are the two largest PLC manufacturers. Both make excellent products. The choice often depends on regional preference, existing infrastructure, and specific application requirements.

Market Position

Allen-Bradley dominates in North America; Siemens leads in Europe and much of the rest of the world. In the US, you'll find more technicians trained on Allen-Bradley, more local spare parts availability, and more existing installed base. Global OEMs often standardize on Siemens due to international presence. Neither is objectively 'better' — both are proven in demanding applications.

Programming Software

Allen-Bradley uses Studio 5000 Logix Designer for ControlLogix/CompactLogix systems. Siemens uses TIA Portal for S7-1200/1500 series. Both are modern, capable environments. Studio 5000 requires separate licenses for each feature (drives, motion, etc.). TIA Portal bundles more functionality but the base license is higher. Both support structured programming, version control integration, and simulation.

Hardware Ecosystem

Rockwell's ecosystem includes PowerFlex drives, Kinetix servos, PanelView HMIs, and Point I/O — all tightly integrated with EtherNet/IP. Siemens offers SINAMICS drives, SIMOTION controllers, Comfort Panels, and ET 200 I/O on PROFINET. Both ecosystems provide complete solutions from the same vendor, simplifying support and integration.

Practical Considerations

Allen-Bradley advantages: Strong US support network, intuitive Add-On Instructions, excellent drive integration. Siemens advantages: Often lower hardware cost, powerful safety integrated into S7-1500F, strong global presence. For most applications, either platform works well. The decision often comes down to what your maintenance team knows, what's already installed, and local support availability.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose based on existing infrastructure, staff skills, and local support — not brand loyalty

  • In the US, Allen-Bradley often makes sense for spare parts availability and local expertise

  • For export machines, Siemens may be easier for international customers to support

  • Both platforms handle demanding applications — neither has a clear technical advantage

  • Multi-platform expertise is valuable — many facilities have both
